Getting
Involved
By Michelene K. Bell
As I was driving home from the dialysis
clinic I found myself stranded. Half way home my car just quit at a stop
light.
Of course Spirit had warned me before hand to take my cell; all of which
I ignored. Granted I had been having challenges with the car not
starting and having to get it jump-started. What’s even more bizarre is
that on the weekend I invested in a jump-starter kit. Spirit even
whispered in my ear to take the kit with me. Again I wasn’t listening.
It must be my hardheaded Pollack mentality! Seriously though, my logic
won out and I left ill-prepared.
So there I was stuck in traffic at a stop light. I approached a young
couple next to me for help. What was so amazing is the fact that they
wouldn’t even roll down the window to offer assistance nor would they
offer to call someone. My response, wow!
People just kept driving around me and I must say that I felt helpless
and alone; wondering what I was to do. But lo’ and behold, two knights
in shining armor appeared. These two individuals came to my rescue and
were willing to get out of their cars and help push me out of harms way.
They even stayed with me until a tow truck could be summoned. They truly
went beyond their generous acts of kindness. In fact, one of them came
back to offer me a bottle of water…what a sweetheart.
Anyway, I made it home with the car, which is now fixed, and have once
again learned a valuable lesson. Spirit does not always shout out
messages for us to listen to. Many times it may be a subtle nudge or
whisper that needs our attention. However, they are not above shouting
when needed. Our job is to hear them and heed their warning.
Of course there is another realization that has occurred to me when the
young couple would not come to the aid of another. It brought to memory
the story I saw about a man in the street being hit by two cars and
leaving the scene. What was so mind boggling is that people on the
street did not come to this man’s rescue and cars just continued driving
around him.
Have we become a society that doesn’t want to get involved? Do we just
look the other way or walk on by? What exactly are we afraid of? And,
are we allowing fear to rule our lives and actions?
These are important questions we need to ask ourselves. I feel that when
we lose the ability to have compassion and a willingness to help our
neighbor or the stranger on the street, we have lost a piece of
ourselves. Humanity and the fate of our planet does depend upon the
hearts and actions of each of us as a whole. Coming from love and
compassion — not fear — goes a long way in saving our society.
Perhaps we can consciously do one good deed for another without thought
of reward.
Happy Father’s Day. Take care my friends,
Blessings in Love & Light
