The Communal Soul
By Jenny Smedley

Loneliness is prevalent in the world today. People are segregated and many live alone in their concrete box. They feel abandoned by humanity and their souls wilt. Long ago people lived and worshipped in tribes as well as nurtured extended families. Outcasts were few.

Today, families fragment, drift apart and live separate lives. Long ago, people believed in animism, whereby everything had a soul, even if it was not animated; every rock, water droplet, plant, animal and person, shared one thing — the possession of a soul.

Further, it also meant every soul and soul fragment was also connected; a part of the communal soul. Loneliness is not possible if one considers that one is part of and indistinguishable from the whole. The question is how one is to connect with the whole when modern life does everything to block it.

To take this a step further. Every molecule in the universe, be it part of an animated organism or not, is sharing the consciousness of the soul pool which also shares some of its ‘intelligence’. This of course is not the intelligence of a material brain, but the intelligence of cohesive thought, which must percolate through every fragment of the communal soul.

Take water for instance. Scientists can tell you a myriad of logical answers as to how oxygen and hydrogen molecules cling together to form the most vital ingredient of life, but cannot tell you ‘why’ it would do it. Water, or H2O, is made up of hydrogen oxygen molecules, which when heated together, transform into water. One oxygen molecule disappears in the process, which is why the formula ends up with being two hydrogen molecules to one of oxygen, hence the formula, H2O.

That’s the ‘how’, but ‘why’ do they do that? Every molecule is part of the whole, and life cannot exist without water. Animism means that each molecule operates within the confines of the communal intelligence, deliberately creating the means for life to evolve and thrive.

Another example of how communal energy, rather than cosmic chance, forms our being can be seen in the random, so called ‘evolution’ of animals. For instance, look at the bat. This creature apparently evolved several talents at once. The ability to use sonar to detect prey, the right ‘vision’ or equivalent sense to see that prey, and the flying ability to catch it. This happening quite by chance is the equivalent to a hurricane hitting a scrap yard and accidentally creating a fully operational motor car.

Trees are very complex entities, and much more like animals than we might think. Their intelligence, while different to humanity, being hormone and chemically based, is nevertheless quite capable of analyzing problems, and finding solutions. Trees that exist in windswept positions, for instance, will grow stronger and develop a wider base than trees in calm areas.

So, how does one tap into the universal consciousness in this modern era where our focus is almost always on the material, rather than the esoteric? The answer lies in trees. Trees have always been seen as a conduit between creatures on the ground and that which lies ‘out there’.

Once we have selected our tree, we stand up to it and put our arms around as far as we can. At first all we will be aware of is the rough bark under our fingers, and beneath our cheek where we rest our face against it. Our sense of smell will gradually be heightened, and the tree’s ‘golden’ slightly tarry scent will go right to the brain. Slowly we will start to feel a beat, a throbbing deep within the tree as its’ sap rises up into the leaves. If the tree is healthy this beat will be very strong, especially in the spring and early summer. There is another energy peak when the fruit is being produced. In the winter, even a strong tree will be more quiescent. In a weak tree, at anytime it will be fainter, and of course a dead tree will have nothing at all. If we maintain our close contact and continue to concentrate, we will gradually feel our own energy melding with that of the tree, drawing us into it, allowing our energies to become one.

Gradually we will start to feel our senses change and heighten as we become aware of white light with your inner eye, coming from the other trees around the one we are hugging. We will sense the grass at our feet growing. After even longer our senses will stretch out like fingertips and start to go deeper into the Earth so that we can feel the roots of the tree as they burrow downwards, seeking water. Our senses will start to spread wide and encompass more and more around us, trees, plants and sometimes even animals.

Once we achieve a really deep level, our spirit will soar up into the sky, passing through the clouds and the blue, through the atmospheric barrier and into the black of space. We will feel our soul whirl among the stars, seeking its own roots and beginnings. We are all made of ‘star stuff’ and we will feel our heart swell with joy as we understand the magnitude of our being. Our spirit will grow and stretch up towards the sun, and we will feel its heat in our soul. We will spread sideways, reaching far off galaxies, like a behemoth in an ocean of light.

This connection with the planet will make us understand our own part in the Universe, and we will never feel alone or abandoned, so long as we have access to a tree’s spirit.
